Treatment of DIHS/DRESS syndrome with combined N-acetylcysteine, prednisone and valganciclovir – a hypothesis

BACKGROUND Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome/drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DIHS/DRESS) is a rare and severe adverse drug reaction with an associated mortality of 10-20%. Clinical worsening despite discontinuation of the culprit drug is considered a characteristic feature of DIHS/DRESS. Besides the early recognition of the syndrome and discontinuation of its causati...

Increased ratio of FoxP3+ regulatory T cells/CD3+ T cells in skin lesions in drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome/drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms.

BACKGROUND Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome/drug rash with eosinophilia with systemic symptoms (DIHS/DRESS) is a severe drug eruption accompanied by multiorgan disorders. Several unique aspects of DIHS/DRESS, including herpesvirus reactivation, liver dysfunction and hypogammaglobulinaemia, have similarities to graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). AIM In this study, we focused on the dynami...

The dynamics of herpesvirus reactivations during and after severe drug eruptions: their relation to the clinical phenotype and therapeutic outcome

BACKGROUND Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome/drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DIHS/DRESS) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) represent contrasting poles of severe drug eruptions, and sequential reactivations of several herpesviruses have exclusively been demonstrated in the former. No previous studies, however, were extended beyond the acu...
